Hermann was founded in 1837 by the German Settlement Society of Philadelphia as a deliberate effort to preserve German language and culture in the American interior — and largely succeeded. The town named itself after Hermann the Cheruscan, planted vineyards in the Missouri River bluffs that made it one of the largest wine producers in America before Prohibition, and today anchors Missouri's wine country. Stone Hill Winery (1847), Maifest, and Oktoberfest still draw visitors, and the local economy is built around wineries, hospitality, food production, and heritage tourism.
