Leavenworth reinvented itself as a Bavarian-themed village in the 1960s — facing economic collapse after the railroad and sawmills left, the town remade its entire downtown in Alpine architecture and built an event calendar around Oktoberfest, Maifest, and the Christmas Lighting Festival. It worked: Leavenworth now draws over two million annual visitors and runs almost entirely on German-heritage tourism. The local business community is concentrated in hospitality, restaurants, retail, and the seasonal-festival economy.
