New Orleans had a substantial German presence long before the great waves of immigration — the German Coast (Côte des Allemands) was settled by German farmers recruited by the Mississippi Company in the 1720s, and German immigration accelerated through the 19th century. By the Civil War, Germans were one of the city's largest immigrant groups. Today's German business community here is smaller but distinctive, concentrated in hospitality, food and beverage, and the trade and shipping economy of the Port of New Orleans.
